Bones[]

Bones are enemies that appear in Castle, The Palace (Heaven's Got a Hitman and Hell Wars), Forest, Desert, The Complex Of Towers and Unfortunate Abbey.

Bones is a skeleton of an unknown monster, it is missing its arms and its skull resembles that of a primitive human, with huge jaw bones and huge incredibly long sharp canines. Its chest, pelvis and legs resemble that of a human, with exception of its spine that has protruding spikes coming out of it and its raptor like feet.

Bones, at first, appear as a pile of bones, hence their name. However, after some time, they will begin to reanimate: a flickering blue light will appear in their rib cage, and then rapidly build themselves up from toes to head. They can be killed prematurely in this state and stop their reanimation. After being reanimated, they will start swinging their body aggressively from left to right and chase the player. Their main attack is gnawing the player, and while it doesn't do much damage, with every bite they steal souls from the player. When they are about to die, they will throw their head at the player and detonate their body which will result in their joints catching up on fire. They almost always appear in large groups. Bones cannot be frozen nor petrified.

If they are under Confusion's effect, or retaliate against enemies that managed to harm them, they will still steal souls from the player when attacking other enemies.

The normal version appears in Castle, Desert and The Complex Of Towers. They take the longest time to reanimate and have a mediocre view distance. They are also fairly small compared to other Bones enemies and cannot detect you if you are behind them, unless you are very close to them.

The normal version is quickly replaced in Castle by a variation that reanimates faster or immediately if the player is within close proximity; and has poor view distance. This is also the main variation that appears in The Palace and briefly in the giant skeletal spine zone of Desert. They are also just as small as the normal ones. An upgraded variation of this one also appears solely at the beginning of The Palace that can detect you even if you are behind them.

An even better variation appears in various zones of The Palace. They are already animated and can be seen leaping from high places, they are similar to the earlier variation with the added benefit that they always know where you are hiding and will always come after you. A peculiar feature to them is that they don't have the flickering blue light within their chest before they land.

Booklet Description[]

Bones are skeleton-like creatures that generally attack with their teeth. Some species of this creature are able to steal Souls and boost their life force. When destroyed the creature explodes, showering deadly shards of bone in all directions.

Big Bones[]

The big version appears only in one big hallway in The Palace (Heaven's Got a Hitman), and in a closed space at the beginning of Unfortunate Abbey. They are bigger than the normal version, activates faster than the normal variation, but slower than the upgraded ones, or instantly if the player is within close proximity. They have poor vision, but can still spot you even if you are behind them and one major feature is that they are faster than their normal counterpart.

They do not appear in the Painkiller: Hell Wars version of The Palace, instead, they have been replaced by a variation that retains most of their properties except the size and speed.

A single better variation that can easily be missed appears in the scorpions section of Desert. Identical to the Big Bones with exception being that it has more health.

Forest Bones[]

A slightly bigger version than the Big Bones appears exclusively in Forest. They are even slower when reanimating than Big Bones but still faster than the normal ones, and still activate immediately if within close proximity. They always know where you are hiding and will always come after you. They are also noticeably slower than the Big Bones, matching the speed of normal ones.

Zombie[]

Zombies are undead humans that are found in Dead City (Battle out of Hell), Underworld, Stone Pit, Desert, Animal Farm, Ragnarok, Haunted City and High Seas.

Zombies resemble most of the Apocalyptic Zombies from Dead City. They are disfigured reanimated corpses of humans, with grey skin, a grey green shirt that is mostly torn from the stomach down, pants with a belt that are also torn down, directly exposing its skeletal legs and leather boots; their arms are also tied behind their back with a rope. Their skin is charred in various places and has a partially exposed rib cage and spine. Most of their facial features are burnt and they always have a gaping mouth.

Zombies behave very similar to the Bones counterpart, they even make the exact same sounds, but they always appear animated, have very different attacks, don't steal souls, don't do a final attack, and can be frozen and petrified. Their only method of attacking is to bend their spine backwards and hit the player with their chin with high force.

The normal version appears in Dead City (Battle out of Hell), Underworld, Desert, Animal Farm, Ragnarok, Haunted City and High Seas. Much like their Bones counterpart, they are small, have mediocre view distance and cannot detect you if you are behind them, unless you are very close to them.

They are always the first to be dispatched when fighting with Pirates.

Slave[]

Slaves (not to be confused with the scrapped enemy of the same name) are a version that is found in Underworld. They are incredibly weak, having only 1 health, are bigger than the normal zombies, and are found on the tracks of the cart in Underworld. They won't move at all and will wait to either be run over by the cart or be killed by the player.

There are two variations of this one found exclusively in Stone Pit: identical to the normal one, but has incredibly good view distance and can detect you even if you are behind them, and an upgraded one that always knows where you are hiding and will always come after you.

There is an unused variation of this enemy found in Underworld that is even bigger, has ordinary health, always knows where you are hiding and will always come after you, and is incredibly fast.

Trivia[]

  • When Bones are not animated, it is possible for their head to turn around to take a look at the player.
  • In the game's files, Zombies are called Pirate Zombies, despite not looking like the other Pirates, and more like an Apocalyptic Zombie.
