Russian Soldier[]

The Russian Soldiers are dangerous soldiers of the Soviet Union that appear in LeningradPainkiller: Battle out of HellPainkiller: Hell Wars, Hangar, High Seas, Magazines and Entrance.

Russian Soldiers are the remains of tall men with the following Soviet Union attire: they wear a mud-covered green army uniform with torn sleeves, shoulder ranks that denote them as Major Generals, seven campaign medals, and seven ribbon bars on their chest; their mud-covered short leggings are also green and have a black belt with the Order of the Red Star on it; they wear a black strap on which is attached a military duffel bag with a MPL-50 Infantry Shovel, black military boots, and strapless SSh-40 steel helmets covering their head and eyes on which is engraved a yellow glowing Red Star. Their body is incredibly withered: their muscles on the arms and legs are covered in mud, inflamed, and shriveled to the point where the bone can be seen; their neck is unusually thin, and their head is just a skull with pointy teeth and also has a monstrous and demonic shape. They wield the drum magazine fed PPSh-41, which has a yellow light coming out of the barrel's holes, that they use to shoot the player.

They are almost always seen charging towards the player's location when they spawn; however, they have a very weak sense of awareness and have a hard time detecting the player if they are not within their field of view or very close to them. Once they spot the player, they will quickly close the distance to have them in their range and fire three shots from their weapons at the target while taunting them in Russian. After some time, they will throw a bouncing grenade at the player that explodes on impact; they won't use this attack if the player is not within their grenade-throwing range or is close to them. They have an unlimited supply of grenades, and their grenade-throwing range is bigger than their shooting range, meaning that they will use this attack if they cannot shoot the player. If the player is very close to them, they will attempt to flee and quickly shoot the player afterwards.

In Painkiller: Hell Wars, their campaign medals and the Red Star from their helmet no longer glow; and the PPSh-41 no longer emits a yellow light from inside.

The normal version appears in Hangar, High Seas, Magazines and Entrance; they are dangerous as they deal devastating damage if they manage to hit most of their shots and grenades. They usually appear in swarms, which makes them incredibly deadly if they are not given priority, capable of killing a player within seconds. They are never aware of the player's location when they spawn, so it is best if they are not alerted.

Booklet Description[]

Defending the streets of war-torn Leningrad, Russian Soldiers are well equipped to dispatch their enemies, using the arsenal of firearms and grenades at their disposal.

Soviet Soldiers[]

The Soviet Soldiers are less dangerous Soldier enemies found exclusively in LeningradPainkiller: Battle out of HellPainkiller: Hell Wars; they shoot less often than normal Russian Soldiers, have increased accuracy, and have severely reduced damage. They are always seen charging towards the player's location.

There are some Soviet Soldiers that distinguish themselves for the fact that they will not charge towards the player once they spawn; these are the Soviet Soldiers that appear alongside the Leningrad Officer at the beginning of the level and the Soviet Soldiers that leave the bunkers.

In Painkiller: Hell Wars, every Soviet Soldier has worse accuracy and attacks even less frequently.

Soviet Sniper Soldiers[]

The Soviet Sniper Soldiers are, in contrast with the Nazi Sniper Soldiers, the most dangerous Soldier enemy found exclusively in LeningradPainkiller: Battle out of HellPainkiller: Hell Wars; they shoot even less often than Soviet Soldiers and do not move, but have incredibly long range and even better accuracy, throw grenades even further and more often, and have incredibly high damage. They are also not afraid to throw grenades even closer to them than Soviet Soldiers but not close enough to damage themselves. They always know where the player is and will shoot them as soon as they enter their range. If the player gets close enough to them, they will not make any attempt to flee, and instead, will just stop attacking the player altogether.

There is an upgraded variation of this one that appears exclusively in the destroyed building before entering the bunkers; they will actually roam the area back and forth instead of staying still, and will shoot the player just as often as a normal Soviet Soldier, making them even more deadly than they already were.

In Painkiller: Hell Wars, every Soviet Sniper Soldier has worse accuracy, attacks even less frequently, and has had his damage halved.

German Soldier[]

The German Soldiers are dangerous soldiers of the Nazi Germany that appear in LeningradPainkiller: Battle out of HellPainkiller: Hell Wars, Magazines and Entrance.

German Soldiers are the charred tall corpses of men with the following Nazi attire: they wear a torn grey Nazi uniform with torn sleeves, insignia that denotes them as "Stabsgefreiter", the second highest rank for the enlisted men, and pockets on either side of the chest; their leggings are also grey and have a black belt with the face of an Aryan man engraved on it and a grey tin can of food and a Model 24 "Potato Masher" grenade attached to it; they also wear the M35 steel helmet without the strap, grey gloves, and have unusual grey boots that are covered in metal plates. Their body is incredibly charred, as they have burns of strong contrast all over the face and abdomen; their arms are lacking flesh entirely; they are missing most of their facial features, including the nose and mouth; their eye sockets are hollow, and what remained of their mouth has fused. They wield a white MP 40 that they use to shoot the player.

They are always seen charging towards the player's location when they spawn; however, they have a very weak sense of awareness and have a hard time detecting the player if they are not within their field of view or very close to them. Once they spot the player, they will quickly close the distance to have them in their range and fire three shots from their weapons at the target while taunting them in German.

In Painkiller: Hell Wars, their burns are no longer of strong contrast, and are rather washed out.

The normal version appears in Magazines and Entrance; they are dangerous as they deal devastating damage if they manage to hit most of their shots and grenades. They usually appear in swarms, which makes them incredibly deadly if they are not given priority, capable of killing a player within seconds. They are never aware of the player's location when they spawn, so it is best if they are not alerted.

Booklet Description[]

In the Purgatory version of Leningrad, the Second World War never ended. The German Soldiers who roam the streets here consider all who oppose them to be enemies, and they don’t hesitate to use guns and explosives to enforce their views.

Nazi Soldiers[]

The Nazi Soldiers are less dangerous Soldier enemies found exclusively in LeningradPainkiller: Battle out of HellPainkiller: Hell Wars; they shoot less often than normal German Soldiers, have increased accuracy, and have severely reduced damage. They are always seen charging towards the player's location.

Much like the Soviet Soldiers, they have a version that does not charge towards the player but it goes unused.

There is also a variation of this one that appears exclusively coming out from the destroyed buildings; the only difference is that they are considerably smaller than the normal Nazi Soldiers.

In Painkiller: Hell Wars, every Nazi Soldier got replaced with the smaller variation, has worse accuracy and attacks even less frequently.

Nazi Sniper Soldiers[]

The Nazi Sniper Soldiers are, in contrast with the Soviet Sniper Soldiers, the least dangerous Soldier enemy found exclusively in LeningradPainkiller: Battle out of HellPainkiller: Hell Wars; they shoot even less often than Nazi Soldiers, do not move, and do not throw grenades even if their Soviet counterpart did. Despite their names, the range, accuracy, and damage are the same as normal Nazi Soldiers'. They always know where the player is and will shoot them as soon as they enter their range. If the player gets close enough to them, they will not make any attempt to flee, and instead, will just stop attacking the player altogether.

In Painkiller: Hell Wars, every Sniper Nazi Soldier is just as small as the small Nazi Soldier and attacks even less frequently.

Air Combat Soldier[]

The Air Combat Soldiers are dangerous and mysterious invading soldiers that appear in Air Combat and Hangar.

Air Combat Soldiers are tall green humanoid enemies that speak Russian and wear clothes similar to the German Soldiers: they wear a torn, bloody pink buttoned uniform with torn sleeves, pockets on either side of the chest, and the emblem of the invading group, which is printed on the right pocket, on both shoulders, and on the left arm; their leggings are also pink and have a matching color belt with the emblem of the invading group engraved on it and a grey tin can with pink outline and a grenade with a bit of pink paint on it attached to it; they also wear strapless yellow steel helmets with the invading emblem engraved on the front part, pink blood splattered gloves, and have unusual grey boots that are covered in golden metal plates and a pink metal plate. Their body has a greenish hue; their arms are lacking flesh entirely; they have facial features similar to a humanoid but are missing the eyes and nose; their eye sockets are hollow, and their mouth is fused. They wield a white submachine gun that they use to shoot the player.

Much like the Russian Soldier and German Soldier, they still have a weak sense of awareness to the player's presence, as they will not attempt to hunt the player unless they come in their field of vision or are very close to them. Once they spot the player, they will quickly close the distance to have them in their range, which is even smaller than the other Soldier enemies, and fire three shots from their weapons at the target while taunting them in Russian.

Russian Zombie Soldier[]

The Russian Zombie Soldiers (or simply "Russian Soldiers") are soldiers of the Soviet Union that appear in Stalingrad and Bunker.

Russian Zombie Soldiers are the remains of tall men with the following Soviet Union attire: they wear a mud-covered green army uniform with torn sleeves, shoulder ranks that denote them as Major Generals, seven campaign medals, and seven ribbon bars on their chest; their mud-covered short leggings are also green and have a black belt with the Order of the Red Star on it; they wear a black strap on which is attached a military duffel bag with a MPL-50 Infantry Shovel, black military boots, and strapless SSh-40 steel helmets covering their head and eyes on which is engraved a yellow glowing Red Star. They wield the drum magazine fed PPSh-41, which has a yellow light coming out of the barrel's holes and a bayonet attached, that they use to shoot and stab the player.

They behave exactly the same as the German Zombie Soldiers. Once they spawn, they will quickly approach the player to have them in their range and fire their weapons at the target while taunting them in Russian, and if the player is close to them, they will always prefer their melee attacks over their weapons which are: a normal kick, a left reverse roundhouse kick, a right reverse roundhouse kick, and using the bayonet to stab the player. Very rarely, they will throw a Model 24 "Potato Masher" at the player with such measly force that it will never reach the target and usually will just hurt themselves; they won't use this attack if the player is not within their grenade-throwing range, or is within their melee range. They have an unlimited supply of grenades, and their grenade-throwing range is the same as their shooting range. If they are possessed, they will always use their melee attacks and never attempt to throw grenades or shoot the enemies, even when they are out of reach.

Military Skeleton Soldier (Hell & Damnation)[]

The second kind wear modern desert camo, along with integrated NVGs which emit a green light. They still have a hole in their chest, however. Both attack variants exist for both kinds of Soldiers, so there's no difference between the troops that rush you in the and the soldiers that rush you in the Military Base. Handle them the same way. All of them last only a few seconds in death, so its very hard to air-juggle them for gold.

Theories[]

Due to their old, dirt covered and rotten look combined with blitzkrieg-rush tactics and their tube-like gas masks, they may be the tormented souls of soldiers that participated in ill-fated trench-rushes during the First World War, that got millions of soldiers killed, which explains why there's so many in Purgatory. The cans they throw could be the deadly poisonous gas used for chemical warfare during that time period, such as mustard gas or chlorine gas.

Trivia[]

  • Given that the German Army and the Soviet Red Army suffered over a million casualties, it would make sense that at least some of these men would end up in Purgatory for their crimes.
  • The Russian Soldiers and German Soldiers will not attack each other unprovoked, both working together to take on the player.
  • The Russian Soldier has one quote that is actually spoken in Polish instead of Russian.
  • The Russian Soldiers, despite being soldiers of the Soviet Union, have medals and ribbon bars awarded by the United Kingdom:
    • The first medal and ribbon bar they wear is the "Military Medal" medal awarded by the United Kingdom since 1916.
    • The second medal and ribbon bar they wear is the "1939-1945 Star" campaign medal instituted by the United Kingdom on 8 July 1943.
    • The third medal and ribbon bar they wear is the "Africa Star" campaign medal instituted by the United Kingdom on 8 July 1943.
    • The fourth medal and ribbon bar they wear is the "Italy Star" campaign medal instituted by the United Kingdom in 1945.
    • The fifth medal and ribbon bar they wear is the "Defence Medal" campaign medal instituted by the United Kingdom in May 1945.
    • The sixth medal and ribbon bar they wear is the "War Medal 1939–1945" campaign medal instituted by the United Kingdom on 16 August 1945.
    • The last medal and ribbon bar they wear is a "Efficiency Medal" medal instituted by the United Kingdom in 1930.
  • The Russian Soldiers have faulty texture wrapping on the back of their collar.
  • The Air Combat Soldiers have faulty texture wrapping on their right upper arm.
  • Painkiller: Battle out of HellPainkiller: Hell WarsPainkiller: OverdosePainkiller: Redemption The German Soldiers have faulty texture wrapping on their right upper arm.
  • Painkiller: Overdose Two new death animations were introduced for them that go unused:
    • The first one has them collapse to the ground.
    • The second one has them collapse backwards to the ground.
  • Painkiller Hell & Damnation Even if the RGD-33 was the standard issue grenade for the Soviet Red Army, Russian Zombie Soldiers will use the Model 24 "Potato Masher" instead, which was the standard issue grenade for the German Army.
  • Painkiller Hell & Damnation Because the game lacks enemy variation, they are usually seen jumping from buildings to attack the player with melee attacks instead of shooting them from a distance.
