Dragonfly[]

Dragonflies (or "Winged Demons") are monstrous demons that appear in Dead City (Battle out of Hell and Hell Wars), Dead Marsh, Haunted Valley, Spikes and Highway to Hell.

Dragonflies are flying half torsos with arms with elongated fingers, head, pale skin, and insect wings sprouting from their chest that they use to fly around. The only clothing they wear is a simple red T-shirt with a white collar. Their body is mangled and twisted in a horrific manner: the chest is inverted, the wings that should've been on the back, are actually on the chest; the head has been twisted so much that the skin on the neck has been totally detached, and the arms are also twisted from the shoulders, the palms ending up on the opposite side. The torso is unusually thin in the middle, which might suggest their loss of internal organs; it has multiple ulcers, flayed and diseased skin, and viscera dangling at the end. They have blood dripping on their arms because of their twisted joints; from their neck, as their neck muscles are exposed; and from the holes where the wings have sprouted. Their mangled head is always dangling and can bend up to 180 degrees; the black hair can be seen dangling; they have crossed eyes where blood can be seen dripping from, and a constant "O" shaped mouth.

They usually appear out of the player's reach but quickly fly towards them in a very erratic manner. They are hard to shoot at as they will zip in the air and only stop to throw one of their projectiles at the player, which the projectile itself will damage the player and leave fire on the ground that disappears after 30 seconds. If the player is at the same level as the Dragonfly, then there is a chance that it might do a melee attack instead of flying away. They continuously make insect noises and a constant swishing sound, which alerts the player to them. They can be frozen and petrified and are the only flying enemy that falls to the ground and shatters when done so.

They will also die on their own if not killed within 50 seconds after spawning.

They will retaliate against enemies that managed to harm them (though, it is very rare for something like this to happen) or when under Confusion's effect. The enemies will always have a hard time harming them, even the Dragonflies themselves, which will usually end up missing each other.

The normal version throws Molotov cocktails at the player, and appears in Dead City (Battle out of Hell and Hell Wars), Spikes and Highway to Hell.

Booklet Description[]

Despite their innocuous name, the Dragonflies of Dead City are actually inverted, flying demons that spew acid on unsuspecting victims. When you hear the swish of this creature’s wings, you might want to run for cover.

Barrel Dragonfly[]

This version appears exclusively in Dead Marsh and Haunted Valley. They are identical to the normal ones, but instead of Molotov cocktails, they will throw mini flaming brown barrels that also explode on impact and leave fire on the ground. However, the barrels still make the bottle shattering sound when exploding.

Winged Demon (Hell & Damnation)[]

Winged Demons are monstrous demons that appear in City, Pentagon (City Critters) and Factory (Survival).

Winged Demons are flying half torsos with arms with elongated fingers, head, pale skin, and insect wings sprouting from their chest that they use to fly around.

They usually appear out of the player's reach, and unlike the original ones, they fly very slowly and are no longer erratic. They will only stop to throw one of their Molotov bottles, which explodes and no longer leaves fire on the ground; they won't throw it if the player is close to them. If the player tries to reach the same level as them, they will stop in place and attack the player aggressively if they are in range. They continuously make insect noises and a constant swishing sound, which alerts the player to them. They can be frozen but no longer fall to the ground, however illogical that might be. They can also be possessed, which will result in them throwing Molotov bottles at the enemies; however, melee enemies can still attack them despite not being at the same level.

They no longer die on their own and will remain on the battlefield until killed by the player.

Trivia[]

  • These enemies appear to be the mangled corpses of pedestrians that have been run over by the cars from Dead City and Highway to Hell. The wings help them move after their unfortunate Hemicorporectomy.
    • Overdose Icon These enemies seemingly take on the role of fairy-tale fairies in the Haunted Valley, while their appearance in Dead Marsh can be explained as the work of the marsh's cultists, being innocent people who were unfortunate enough to be captured and monstrified by the madmen.
    • Redemption Icon It is hard to give an actual explanation on why they appear in Spikes. It can be written off as them being used as filler flying-threat type enemies.
  • Them dying on their own was probably done in case they would get out of bounds which would have lead to a softlock.
    • It can be assumed that their mutations are incompatible with life, which can explain their inevitable deaths.
    • Taking in their method of attack and the assumption above, it can be theorised that these people were artificially mutated to spread chaos and, eventually, die by themselves (in the context of the Dead City level).
  • Their supply of explosives is unlimited, and it is unknown from where they take them.
    • BOOH Icon The booklet suggested that they were supposed to spit acid at the player; however, this was either scrapped or forgotten.
  • Overdose Icon The Barrel Dragonfly is called "Winged_Demon_psp" in the game's source code, which might hint that it was a leftover from the cancelled PSP port of Painkiller: Hell Wars.
  • Overdose IconRedemption IconRecurringEvil Icon They will always gib when killed.
  • BOOH IconOverdose IconRedemption IconRecurringEvil Icon When they are killed, their body will be incredibly susceptible to inertia, which will make them fly at very high speeds sometimes.
  • PKHD Icon These enemies appear in Pentagon (City Critters), which is now directly linked to City, being located beneath it and alongside the military, which reinforces the theory of their artificial origin.
  • PKHD Icon Winged Demons' explosion deals 120 constant damage to anything that isn't a player; and 120/84/60/36 damage when under Confusion's effect.
  • PKHD Icon These enemies can be damaged by explosions at their shadow location; the Soul Catcher's beam and Electrodriver's beam will also automatically latch onto the enemy if aimed below them.
    • They will also have a glowing blue light at their shadow's position when they are frozen.
